About Us

Prior to 1997 a group of golfing enthusiasts in Batterstown had played golf most Sunday Mornings. The leaders of this group included Seamus Gaughan, Walter Wade Walters brothers Lar and Shay. It was suggested to Seamus that maybe a society should be formed in Batterstown. Seamus listen and gave it some consideration, after some months Seamus approached Austin Geoghegan for advise on how to proceed in the setting up of the society. Notices were placed in the parish bulletin, word was spread and a date fixed for the society first meeting to establish what is now known as Batterstown Golfing Society (BGS). The meeting held in Caffreys was well attended and the rest is history

Our first outing to the Glebe was a huge success with golfers non-golfers alike. Some people took to Golf like chicks to water and others drifted away. The Society organised Golf lessons for all concerned started in the GAA hall in Batterstown and progressed to the driving range in Derryland, this continued for some years later. The success of the society is due to the captains and the respective committee's over the years along with all the very generous sponsors. Pascal & Elenor Fahy (The Village Pump) has been our major sponsor from the beginning. This is the reason why the society adopted the Pump/Golf bag as our logo. All our outings are sponsored which help reduce our costs of the golf outings.
